Women's Health Q&A

What Happens During a Women’s Annual Exam?

The doctor will perform a well-woman or women’s exam yearly in order to monitor a patient’s general and reproductive health in addition to overall well-being. These exams help the doctor to address an issue as soon as it develops. During the exam, women will receive a:

  • Physical assessment
  • Pap smear and/or pelvic exam
  • Breast exam
  • Revision to medical history as well as life and work routines
  • Review of previous concerns and family history
  • Update of supplements and medications
  • Immunizations evaluation
  • Assessment of required health screenings, such as a mammogram

What Happens if an Issue is Discovered?

The physician can arrange a treatment plan to address any and all medical illnesses or conditions found during the exam. If the issue is more severe or progressed, the treatments may have to start that day. It can also be a continuing treatment process. Multiple conditions or issues are only found when a woman after a pap smear exam is performed. This exam assists the doctor to identify any irregularities or unexpected changes before they become the cause of the harm to the woman’s reproductive organs or overall health. The results of the exam will always be discussed with the patient.

What Should I Do to Get Ready for the Annual Exam?

Usually, the first thing the doctor will do is ask questions about medical history and any hereditary conditions. Patients should be prepared to answer these question fully and honestly. Being aware of which illnesses have been experienced by your family members and having a list of medications being used can help prepare patients greatly. Any concerns being experienced will also need to be discussed. Patients should be sure to mention any changes to the doctor. While some situations may be uncomfortable to discuss, the doctor is here to help and it is very important to discuss them in case they are a sign of a more serious condition. Women should also make a list of questions they may have including information on:

  • Eating healthier
  • Birth control selections
  • Safety and relationship issues
  • Getting pregnant
  • Being more physically active
  • Sexually transmitted infections and diseases
  • Anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions
