Sexually Transmitted Disease Q&A
What is a Sexually Transmitted Disease?
Sexually transmitted diseases, also referred to as STDs and venereal diseases, are diseases caused by infections which can be communicated through sexual activities. These infections can consistently occur without any indications or symptoms. Some will only exhibit symptoms months or possibly years after becoming infected with the condition. Medically, infections are referred to as diseases once symptoms are noticeable. This is why STDs can also be called as sexually transmitted infections, or STIs. Many types of venereal diseases can be cured successfully. However, a few of the diseases will cause severe complications, will not be curable, and can even be fatal when not treated.
What Forms of STDs are there?
There are several types of STIs and STDs. Unfortunately, they are quite common throughout the world. In the US alone, more than 50% of all the country’s residents will contract a sexually transmitted infection at least once in during lives. STD types include:
- Scabies
- Syphilis
- Herpes
- Chlamydia
- Hepatitis B
- HIV & AIDS
- Gonorrhea
- Genital Warts
- Trichomoniasis
- Pubic Lice (Crabs)
- Molluscum Contagiosum
- Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Should I Get Tested?
If you are experiencing symptoms of an STD, such as burning during urination, sores on the genitals, itching, or a discharge from the penis or vagina, it is important to be tested. However, it is important to remember that many infections do not cause symptoms. Several individuals have an STIs and are not aware of it. This can cause people to get infected and spread the infection without ever experiencing symptoms. If you have had; oral, anal, or vaginal sex without the use of a condom, dental dam, female condom, or other barrier method, talk to the health care provider about STD testing. This can put your mind at ease and if needed get you and your partner treated.
